What is the Mongol Rally?

The world is just a little bit too safe. Gone are the days where the edge of the map called you forth to discover what lay beyond - satellite maps and GPS have it laid out before you leave the armchair.

Our remedy is a rally which starts from Goodwood racetrack in England and winds it’s way to the Mongolian capital, UlaanBaatar... Approximately five weeks and a big adventure later (23 countries, 2 continents, around 60 tanks of gas, about 18 - 20,000 kms (and that's if we don't get lost!), from sea level to the 2nd highest highway in the world (over 4,600m), temperatures from -10˚C to +45˚C) and what you have is the Mongol Rally!

Check out the Mongol Rally website for the full low down of the rally... What's more, become a Billi Tees Facebook fan and we will keep you posted to all their adventures! Team Good Bye Pork Pie also have a Facebook page too, so check 'em out!

A great adventure, for a good cause

The Mongol Rally isn't just about adventure, it's also about raising huge sacks of cash for some great charities. In 2007 the Mongol Rally topped £200,000 and we hope to smash that this year.

Each team coming on the Rally raises a minimum of £1000 for the Rally charities. Team Good Bye Pork Pie's chosen charity is the Christina Noble Children's Foundation. Check it out at www.cncf.org. You can donate money directly to this charity through www.justgiving.com, or buy a supporters tee designed for the crew by Billi Tees, and we'll donate $10 from each purchase to the charity... Why the name – Good Bye Pork Pie

The trio have taken the classic 80's kiwi movie as our inspiration for the Mongol Rally. The movie starts in the north of NZ where Gerry Austin, a 19 year-old houligan stumbles across an opportunity (in the form of a lost wallet), a friend (John) and an adventure. They start to head to Invercargill at the south of NZ in a stolen Yellow Mini, pick up hitch-hiker, Shirl and have a mad-cap roadtrip adventure ending in their beloved Yellow Mini arriving without doors, in flames and backwards at the final destination.
So, as you can see - this film perfectly sums up their challenge:
- low budget
- big road trip
- big adventure
- small car
- 2 guys, 1 gal... and a bit of kiwi ingenuity!

What car are they taking?

As much as they would love to take a yellow mini and do the rally in true Good Bye Pork Pie style... there are some rules set out by the rally organisers.
1) The car must be less than 10 years old
2) The car must be less than 1.2 L
The rules are set out to ensure that you do break-down and interact with the locals, can't have it too easy now can we... Check out the car below... it's one racey looking thing and I'm confident it will last the distance!

And the crew... who are these adventure seeking folk?

The Crew

Carmen:

Carmen is kiwi-born but travels the world from a top-secret base in Switzerland.  Swiss military-like precision combined with kiwi ingenuity may make a weird combination, but we think it makes her perfect for keeping the guys in line (and fed!) on the rally.

Marc:

Marc reckons he can fix anything, from a 747 to a tin-can opener. The desert conditions, lack of tools and funny languages ranging from French to Uzbekistanian will put this statement to the test.

Brent:

Brent cannot find his way out of a paperbag and frequently gets lost, good thing getting lost on the rally is classed as 'sight-seeing'.  The objective is to keep heading EAST - can't be too hard...  Brent was most recently quoted for saying "No plan is a good plan"

Buy a tee and support the cause!

Billi Tees is right behind Team Good Bye Pork Pie and think you should be too! We've designed their wicked team 'kit' and think it's so cool, that you should have one to show your support of this awesome adventure – and cause.

What's even cooler, we will be donating $10 from every tee purchased to Team Good Bye Pork Pie's chosen charity. So not only will you look cool, but you'll be doing good at the same time.

T-shirt are now on sale! Click MENS or WOMENS to purchase yours now!
